In the project sponsored by the
Foreign and Commonwealth Office, United Kingdom through the British
Council Division, TREC - STEP has designed, developed and launched
a web-based Post Diploma Programme in Environmental Management
Systems, targeted at working professionals and students. BHEL,
Trichy with its vast experience and expertise in Environmental
Management Systems has provided required inputs for developing
the curriculum to meet the practical needs of the industry. National
Centre for Business and Sustainability, University of Salford
has also provided advisory inputs.
EMS is basically a tool for an organization
for assessing and controlling the impact of its activities, products
and services on its environment. EMS not only facilitates environmental
protection but also acts as a catalyst to accelerate adoption
of improved industrial management techniques and better production
processes, which will result in improved operating efficiency
and thus an increase in profits and a competitive edge for the
whole business. This project shall bring together budding EMS
professional and experts in respective fields of EMS to work together
over the web to solve real life Environmental issues, in addition
to providing a comprehensive curriculum in EMS, online.
The curriculum comprising of case
studies, simulated exercises and sector specific projects on EMS,
Experts Forum, an Internet Interaction Programme is the core contribution
of the project.
TREC - STEP launched the Web
Curriculum on 7th March, 2002, the website URL is www.step-ems.com.
As part of this project, Seminars, Work-shops and sector specific
training modules in Environmental Management Systems have been
organized. This project assumes greater significance and social
relevance today, where there is a rampant depletion of natural
resources and degradation of the environment by building local
and regional capabilities to effectively counter these issues.
